Left New York for Bremerhaven on 18 August 1956[1]
Arrived in New York from Bremehave on 6 August 1959[1]
Mom didn't really write anything about her travels with Dad while they were stationed in Stuttgart, but there were a few things I wanted to memorialize from her scrapbook. [There were family travels, too, most notably to Denmark.]
They took a big trip, later in the spring of 1959 (guess knowing they would be going stateside soon). Again, nothing written, but lots of documents, including three postcards (two from Florence, one from Rome). Obviously, Granny stayed with us on this trip. As interpreted from scrapbook:
March 23-March 24(?) Bellinzona, Switzerland
March 24 Mantua [left car there? see below]
March 25-March26 Bologna
March 26-March 28(?) Florence
March 30-April Rome
April 2-April 3 Ravenna
April 3-April 4 Venice
So, a little mystery: The scrapbook contains this letter, but I have no idea who this person is! [Postcard from Bologna mentions a name, but not sure if that relates to this. My original thought was that this was a driving trip, but now think they took the train for quite a bit. No scrapbook evidence (tickets, etc.) either way (other than car park for the day in Verona).
They also took a couple other trips. One was to the Bodensee (Lake Constance):
April 27-April 28 Hotel Bayerischer Hof
April 28-April 29 Hotel Metorpol St. Gallen
April 29-May 1 Insel-Hotel Konstanz
Notes:
Interesting on neither manifest is Dad listed. Something about not listing US Army officers?! He certainly was with us both ways. We were all on Mom's passport so that certainly was another reason to separate us out.
